A run-down house located in Taipei’s Da’an District, with a chaotic layout, numerous wall corners, inadequate lighting, and overly long corridors. Designer Zheng Minghui creatively reimagined the space using a concept of square boxes, resulting in a comfortable and well-organized residential “light box.”
Removing enclosed walls to create an open atmosphere.
Upon entering the entrance, a tall, deep blue corridor captures the visual center with white walls extending infinitely on both sides.
The open public space encompasses the living room, dining area, and kitchen, which are the core of family life. The living room and kitchen windows reflect each other, creating a refreshing and bright ambiance. Designer Zheng Minghui removed the enclosed kitchen wall, transforming the awkward guest bathroom into a flat design. The wall next to the television was also flattened, and a blue corridor was placed in the central position, resembling a square box that leads to the private areas of the house.
Integration of objects in the same color, creating a smooth wall surface.
The essence of the spatial design lies in integrating the layout and diverse household items into a cohesive whole. The dining area combines black wine cabinets, a black piano, and other black household appliances in one place. They are covered by cabinets of the same color scheme, creating a unified black background that gives scattered items a sense of belonging.
The island dining table emerges in front of the background like an architectural model. Built using mineral paint similar to the floor, it appears as if a naturally formed architectural structure on the floor. The interplay between wooden panels and black blocks showcases the minimalist lifestyle and design sensibilities bestowed by the homeowner and designer.
Box-like doors for functional concentration.
The blue corridor connects to the family’s bedrooms, which feature storage rooms and cabinets cleverly tucked away in corner spaces. The corridor concentrates functionality within a box-like structure, reducing the number of doors and walkways and creating a clean and efficient flow.
The master bedroom behind the blue box continues the pure white color scheme, with the bed facing ample windows for natural light. An L-shaped corner connects the wardrobe and bathroom, creating a seamless area for changing and bathing. Linear light sources establish a warm and relaxing atmosphere at night.
In the master bedroom, a hidden sliding door leads to the children’s room. With a pink and blue bunk bed, it becomes a cradle for nurturing children’s dreams. Opening the sliding door allows the young ones to move freely between their parent’s rooms and circulate the blue box, forming a loop within the wooden corridor. They run around the house, completely overturning the layout of the old house and embracing a modern, flexible approach to space utilization.
The wooden corridor in the children’s room allows sunlight to diffuse, creating a warm light box that extends straight into the living room. It injects a sense of warmth into the communal area.
